Gary, in the pantheon of monster drummers, you are one of the "monsterest".

Your playing on the IOU disc is some of my favorite playing.

I'll pick up the DVD.

Regards.

Gould was indeed great w 42, but you KA [or "KO," as it were] as well, G-man!

It says a lot for the 42 guys to have hired you, & Allan can't be all that wrong, either!
You freekin SHRED, m' man - 1 of my FAVE players out there...sound like I'm kissg arse? You bet - you're a great player [& big inflence on myself]

Gary, there's a drum clinic bootleg out there with yourelf & Vinnie [Colaiuta, of course]...could you enlighten us as to when & where this was, exactly?

Thanx in advance, best of 'luck,' & warmest regards!

Dear FuseU1, and guys,

Thanks for all the nice comments buds.

The Vinnie and me clinic ... ooh, I remember not playing too brilliantly on that one. Must have been around 1989 I guess. There's a bootleg of course huh!!? Hmm. probably best left in my long-term memory banks!

I do appreciate all those nice words though. I'll never stop trying - like all of us!

I do think I'm playing better now than at all before. The new Steve Topping one (about to be released) is nice ... the new Live at the Apollo Lev 42 DVD ain't bad ... there's a nice one in the can with AH and Jimmy Johnson (from 2000) but Allan may take still a while to finish it. Better than all of it I think I'm more pleased with this up and coming Force Majeure DVD and audio box set that will come out in a few months. (Live concert of my own band.)

I'll just keep my website updated with all that stuff as much as I can for those who may be interested.

Great forum!

Sincerely in music to all you guys,

Gary H.

Welcome Gary.
Can you maybe give us what is was like getting the call and moving forward with Level42? Guaranteed was a kewl cd to me, which I think was the first you did with the band? Along with Dominic Miller on guitar?

Thanks Randy,

No "Staring At The Sun" (1988) was the first album I did with L42. I was originally asked in 1985 - Phil Gould had left then ... but came back - I guess saving going into retirement properly until 1988! (He did come back and play on a 94 album with them though ... but as far as I know the guy hasn't done anything since and has virtually given up! What to do.)

I think the only decent things I did with Mark King/Level 42 were "Live At The Jazz Cafe" (2000 CD) "Live At Wembley" (1988 CD), "Live at the Isle Of Wight" (2001 DVD) and the new one "Live At The Apollo". I think there were bits on other records that were okay, but not consistant. I guess I was always too much of an improviser by nature, and never too concerned with funky pocket stuff ... but I think I'm doing better for them these days, and playing generally better in that way. For what it's worth.

Thanks again for the enquiry.

Yours,

Gary H

Personally I think your a fantastic drummer and I apologize for my harsh remark above, it's just I really dug Phil's playing especially on Running in the Family and the video fro that tour.
I have the live DVD Isle of Wight and that's kewl, also have your video you did with Mark King as a guest and that rocks.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif"> Sad to read that... I know he's got a Web Site www.philgould.com but doesn't seem to have been updated for some time...

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Gary, so I am assuming you took some time to specifically work on your pocket, feel and groove (which I find not all that bad )?

The Live at Wembley's got some ferocious drumming on it, much to be proud of. Like you said in the interview posted in this board, you're yourself and you're interpreting Level 42's tunes the best way you know how and you did a great job, taking in consideration that you're not a groove/pocket specialist.

Thanks. I do my best.

In all music. I do everything I can do to make it alive and to make it live and be essential. I'm sure it's the aim of all of us. That was always my personal, singular aim ... ever since I saw John Von Ohlen with Stan Kenton in 1972 - one of my first very important inspirations and heros. It's all his fault! What an unsung hero that man has been. Keith Moon meets Mel Lewis. Obsessed, and totally "taken" and "in" the music.

Cheers again,

Gary H.

Gary,

What's your opinion of Moon, up or down? I think he's a mad genius and one of the most expressive drummers I've heard.
